Karma Yoga: Yoga of Action

Offering all of one’s actions unto me in knowledge of the indwelling Supersoul, free from desire, selfishness, and grief, fight! -- Lord Krishna to Arjuna Bhagavad- Gita 3.30

Karma Yoga is selfless service. Often we picture karma yoga as feeding the hungry, clothing the needy or nursing the sick, but in reality karma yoga
encourages us to be who we are in the world, but offer the fruit of our labor to the Supreme. Everything can be dovetailed into an offering, our wisdom and knowledge as a teacher, our love and gratitude as a husband or wife and our feelings of compassion to our fellow man or woman.

The key within Karma yoga is to ensure that our action does not become selfish. In this way the "I" or ego gives way to "oneness." When the act becomes selfless then it becomes “karma free”; we are giving the results of our action to the Divine.

“Persons who constantly practice this, my own doctrine, with full faith and without envy are also released from karmic reactions”
-- Gita 3.31

Karma Yoga teaches us that in giving of ourselves we can experience great joy within, this in turn gives us great spiritual strength and grants us conscious union with God and Truth.

"The Lord is the Breath shining forth from all beings. Seeing him present in all, the wise man is humble, puts not himself forward, he becomes truly wise, not a talker only. His delight is in the Self, his joy is in the Self, he serves the Lord in all."
-- Mundaka Upanishad

When desire is let loose to run wild it becomes lusty for material enjoyment or passion. It resides in the heart like a cancer, when obstructed it turns to anger and will eventually destroy us completely. We may gain the riches of the material world, yet in the process we lose our memories and forget who we really are, jiva soul and what our relationship to God is.
Therefore, we should take shelter under the shade of the “materially” desireless tree.

The true Yogi will see God in the heart of everyone and everything; therefore he will treat them with the same reverence and unconditional love.
