The Planet Jupiter

Jupiter, by nature, is the most wonderful and expansive planet giving to the human race their most munificent qualities. It is the most pious of planets, known as guru or teacher. Jupiter is the signifier of good luck and good fortune, as well as being indicative of long distance travel We understand the good karma earned in the previous lives by the placement of Jupiter.

Jupiter is also the ruler of religion and religious devotions and thus comes the name, Guru. He is the controller of all other planets, the revered spiritual master of the demigods. Philosophy and spirituality are under the auspices of Jupiter, as are financial affairs and wealth. Jupiter is also the indicator of children in the chart and, in a woman’s horoscope, it is the indicator of what kind of a husband she will attain in this life and what their relationship will be like. A strong Jupiter indicates one whose opinions are valued by many; therefore, teachers fall in this category. Jupiter is noble, dignified, and optimistic, of good humor and the giver of the fruits of labor.

Jupiter is ruler of the zodiacal signs Sagittarius and Pisces, is exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn. He gives especially beneficial effects posited in the nakshatras of Uttara Phalguni, Uttarashadha, Punarvasu, Purvabhadrapad and Vishaka. They will engage in spiritual meditation and inquire as to the true purpose of human life in this world. This is the greatest boon. To attempt to uncover the true “self”, to become “self-realized” is the ultimate goal of life. Those who engage in actions designed to remove the covering of “maya” (illusion or “that which is not”) is understood to be of the highest caliber of human beings. The Vedas consider that the person who tries to solve the problem of repeated birth and death in the material world, transmigrating through 8,400,000 species of life, is of the most developed intelligence and greatly fortunate. The Vedic philosophy of karma is that a soul gets the reactions to his past actions, so a well placed Jupiter indicates one who has been of a pious nature in previous lives. “As one sows, so he shall reap”; this is the immutable law of action and reaction.

If well-placed Jupiter gives compassion, benevolence, charity, morality, wisdom and truthfulness. Anyone with great ambition is influenced by Jupiter, as are priests, monks and spiritual teachers. He rules those in political and legal professions and those who have control over their external senses. Physically Jupiter rules the blood circulation in our arteries, the liver, thighs and “fat” in the body.

Yellow Sapphire

Yellow sapphire is the gemstone recommended to strengthen Jupiter. The yellow sapphire will radiate the qualities of generosity, wisdom and compassion. It serves to strengthen the Jupiterian energy and attract the energies ruled over by Jupiter. Many times a change is affected in financial status within a short period of time. It serves to bring material abundance and prosperity, as well as a more philosophical outlook on life. Those that practice meditation find that wearing the yellow sapphire, their ability to concentrate increases, thereby magnifying the peace and joy reaped from such spiritual discipline. Physically, it can raise levels of energy, help to gain needed body weight and to strengthen the overall immune system.

Yellow sapphires should be for the most part clear to the eye and of a lemony-yellow colour. It is commonly heat-treated to make it more saleable to the public, although many people have never seen or heard of one. If heated it gets a darker golden or brownish yellow color and this material is useless for our purposes, for its inherent potencies have been destroyed in the heating process.

They are to be set in rings or pendants, if in a ring, are best worn on the forefinger (next to the thumb) of the right hand. It may also be worn on the ring finger of the right hand. There are several sources of yellow sapphires including Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Australia and Africa, but the only place I seem to be able to still purchase enough natural (unheated) material is Sri Lanka or India (where the stones originate from Sri Lanka).

If worn properly, with faith and determination, achievement of the desired effects shall come about quickly.

Instructions for Installation of Yellow Sapphire

The weight should be at least 2 carats and if possible is best if mounted in yellow gold. Once the proper gem has been acquired, whether mounted in a ring or pendant, the back must be open so that the gemstone comes into contact with the skin. A ring is best worn on the Jupiter finger (forefinger) of the right hand, but may be worn on the Sun finger (ring finger). For further empowerment the following short ritual may be performed on a Thursday, one hour before Sunset when the Moon is waxing.

1. Rinse yellow sapphire ring/pendant with water
2. Rinse in cow’s milk
3. Rinse again in water
4. Place ring/pendant on home altar/shrine (or sacred place) before a picture of Brihaspati (the ruler of Jupiter) or a Jupiter Yantra
5. Light incense
6. Meditate on desired benefits
7. Chant mantra and repeat 108 times:
8. “Om Brim Brihaspataye Namah Om”
9. Place ring on forefinger of right hand or pendant on chain around the neck
