The gemstones used must be of natural origin and must not have been treated with heat or irradiation in a laboratory. Such treatments are widely used in the industry to improve the color or clarity of stones. This negates the stone's inherent energies, rendering it useless for therapeutic applications.

Bhasmas and Pisthis

There are medicines made from gems' ashes (bhasmas) and powders (pisthis), which have been used to cure disease by taking internally. The results have been astounding and referred to as "the ancient editions of modern isotopes". The only gems of three major nine that are made into �pisthis� are pearl and coral. Pearl is used for treating gastric, hormonal and menstrual difficulties. Red coral is used with blood disorders.

The gems ruby, emerald, sapphires of all colors, diamonds, gomeds, cat�s-eyes, and many more are so toxic that they cannot be absorbed into the bodies systems without first being burned into a fine ash. They prepared in an elaborate way, with specific mantras spoken. These �bhasmas�, understandably, are getting more difficult to obtain. They should only be prescribed by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Gem Elixirs

There is also a method of placing a high-quality gem in a solution of diluted alcohol and placed in darkness for approximately 7 days, which allows the vibratory force of the gem to permeate the alcohol solution. This solution is then used as medicine. The gemstone loses no potency so this medicine may be made again and again with the same gem.

Another process is to place a gem in water in a glass jar in the sunlight. This will allow the water to absorb this vibratory force, helped by the rays of the sun. A qualified Ayurvedic practitioner can mix different gem waters or tinctures for use by patients.

Vedic astrologers and Ayurvedic practitioners advise wearing one or more of the �planetary nine gems�, after the astrological chart has been examined. The gem is usually set in a ring or pendant and must touch the skin. Gems should be recommended for the planet, which is weak, but not causing evil. They can also be worn to further strengthen a well-disposed planet, increasing its positive rays.
