CAT’S- EYE – GEMSTONE OF KETU
The Planet Ketu
Ketu, like Rahu, is a shadow planet and is said to be malefic by nature. It is actually a spiritual planet and an indicator of enlightenment. It gives spiritual tendencies and nonattachment to material ambition/wordily desires. It can give the wisdom to attain spiritual knowledge, or knowledge of the self (self-realization). Accordingly it is considered a “moksha-karaka”, or a force, which can lead to enlightenment and freedom from the cycle of repeated birth and death.
To those so influenced it may give psychic potencies, giving them great abilities in the healing arts. Subjects may become adept in natural forms of healing body and mind, herbology, tantra and the way of dealing with those disturbed by forces on the astral plane. This may include ghosts and other malefic spirits.
Ketu is exalted in Scorpio, debilitated in Taurus and is strong in either of Jupiter’s signs of Sagittarius or Pisces, as well as the signs of Mercury. He rules the nakshatras of Ashvini, Magha and Mula.
His position may indicate things concerning hands and feet, the mother relationship and shows its greatest effects between the ages of 48 and 54 years.
Cat’s-Eye
Cats-Eye is the gemstone recommended for Ketu; specifically Chrysoberyl cat’s-eye. The darker varieties are generally a greenish body color, but it is also found in a “milk & honey” color.
The source countries for cat’s-eyes are India, Burma, Sri Lanka and Brazil.
Cat’s-Eye is said to increase powers of perception and insight. It should also give greater discrimination in acting. The ancients believed that cats-eye protected individuals from epidemics or diseases, from drowning and from enemies, as well as heightening psychic perceptions. Coincidentally it is supposed to bring good fortune to gamblers. Apatite cat’s-eye or any other variety of cat’s-eye may be substituted for cat’s-eye Chrysoberyl.
Instructions for Installation of Cat’s-Eye
Cat’s-eye is ideally purchased on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday when the Moon is in the signs of Sagittarius, Pisces, or Aries, or in the constellations (nakshatras) of Ashvini, Mula, or Magha. It should be at least 3 carats and of a good color, free of harmful imperfections. It may be set in a combination of gold, iron and silver or, alternatively, in one of them, or platinum. The normal rule that it is mounted in a ring or pendant with an open back to allow the gem to contact the wearer’s skin applies and, if a ring, is worn on the small finger of the left hand. For more empowerment the following short ritual may be performed on a Thursday, from two hours after Sunset to midnight:
- Rinse cat’s-eye ring/pendant in water
- Rinse in cow’s milk
- Rinse again in water
- Place on home altar/shrine (or sacred place) before a picture of Ketu, or a Ketu Yantra
- Light incense
- Meditate on desired benefits
- Chant mantra 108 times: “Om Kaim Ketave Namah Om”
- Place ring on small finger of left hand, or pendant on chain and around the neck
